This painting was inspired by Māori mythology in which Hine is referred to as the ‘Goddess of Death/Night’. She receives the spirits of humans when they die and readies them for the next stage of their journey. The acrylic painted background in the colour french ultramarine depicts the night sky and the constellations and various intricate patterns drawn with titanium white ink denotes the souls of the dead.
